Newman Theological College extends its deepest gratitude to Dr. Jo-Ann Badley for dedicated leadership and commitment to the college during her tenure as interim president over the past year.
“On behalf of the Archdiocese of Edmonton, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Jo-Ann,” said Rev. Paul Kavanagh, Archdiocesan Administrator.
“Jo-Ann has ensured that the college's mission and operations remain steadfast during the search for a permanent leader. We are truly grateful for the stability and support she provided. It was a privilege to witness how faith, compassion, and education are interwoven so meaningfully under her guidance. We thank her for her dedication to the students, faculty, and the broader college community.”
Ryan Antonello, vice-chairman of the Board of Governors, added:
“On behalf of the Board of Governors, I extend our deepest gratitude to Jo-Ann, who graciously came out of retirement to lead the College on short notice during a time of transition. Her wise counsel, and generous spirit have not only helped the College navigate its challenges but also ensured a smooth path forward through the selection of our new president.”
Over the past year, Dr. Badley has played a pivotal role in guiding the college through a period of growth, stability, and continued commitment to its Catholic mission and values. Dr. Badley, a former professor at Newman Theological College, served as interim president of NTC until Dr. Darren Dahl began his term as the new president of the college on June 23, 2025
“I am so very grateful to Dr. Badley for all her work as Interim President,” Dr. Dahl said. “Not only did she accomplish a great deal of necessary transitional work to allow me to assume my new position, but she went above and beyond in beginning to establish infrastructure that will continue to strengthen Newman’s reputation as a centre of deep theological learning and academic excellence in Western Canada.
“On top of all this, she was unfailingly available and tremendously helpful in my transition into the President’s office.”
Dr. Badley has a PhD in New Testament from the University of St. Michael's College at the Toronto School of Theology. She taught Biblical Studies and Hermeneutics for more than 40 years, including a decade at Newman Theological College.
She retired in 2022 as Dean of Theology from Ambrose University in Calgary. She served for six years on the Roman Catholic-Evangelical dialogue team and consulted with the team at Newman for the recent accreditation review for the Association of Theological Schools.
