NTCSA History

Newman Theological College Student Association (NTCSA) has been an important part of the intellectual, spiritual and social life of Newman Theological College for the last four decades.

The first Student Council election took place in March of 1986. One of the first tasks of the new Student Council was to choose a student delegate to attend the Canadian Theological Students Conference, an ecumenical event focused on various social justice issues. NTCSA sent delegates to this event and more recently to the Canadian Theological Society Congress and the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress.

Over the years there have been 38 student council presidents which have included 20 seminarians (including 2 Ukrainian Catholic seminarians), 9 lay women, 7 lay men, 1 Anglican woman and 1 man from the United Church.

Since the beginning the Student Council has had representatives on the many boards and councils of the College. Student Councils have also participated in NTC Open Houses, Convocation, Orientation Day. During the Annual Parish Fundraising Campaign, the NTCSC also assisted by speaking in parishes.

NTCSA’s social committees have hosted a variety of social events over the years such as saint’s day costume parties, family and square dances, talent and karaoke nights, Christmas caroling, theology on tap nights, wine and cheese socials, pizza parties, movie and board game evenings, Shrove Tuesday brunches, Christmas and year-end parties, and the orientation day barbeques.

For years the Student Council had a Sports Committee chair who organized shuffleboard tournaments, skating parties, volleyball games and badminton tournaments. After a long hiatus, the NTCSC once again coordinates weekly sports activities. It has also facilitated much of the spiritual life of students on campus by organizing Mass or Divine Liturgy, special liturgies such as the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity services, Anglican Evensong, and the Liturgy of the Hours.

The NTCSA has initiated a number of social justice educational and service events, including promoting the use of fair-trade products on campus, organizing service events such as Justice in January, a Lenten solidarity lunch, a Hope Mission clothing drive, students serving lunch at the Mustard Seed Church, and handing out backpacks of supplies to homeless people. The NTCSA also initiated a recycling program on campus in 2004 that is still in use.

In the 1990s, the Council instituted a Student Emergency Fund to assist students who were experiencing a temporary financial crisis. This fund has served almost 20 students over the years.

In 1996 the students (with the help of the Sisters of St. Louis) created the Sr. Anne Honig Service Award to recognize the efforts of those students who have shown exemplary dedication and service to NTC and who foster a sense of community at the College.

The NTCSC manages the kitchen to ensure that it is kept clean and well stocked with cooking implements.

Today, the student body and the wider Newman community continues to be served by its Student Council which consists of its President, VP Academic, VP Finance, VP Student Life, VP Spiritual Life, VP Communications, a Secretary, and its graduate and undergraduate representatives.
